A Look at the Valley Fever Numbers for 2012
Reporting of Valley Fever Cases are not very good. Even though they are better at reporting in Arizona it is still considered that only 2% of cases are actually reported. The number of cases reported through April in Arizona is more accurate than their May or June numbers. I have spoken with the person that is involved and have been told they are months backlogged with adding up the cases and the more accurate numbers will not be known for possibly several months from now. However, with that said I can at least give you what is known that has been reported to the CDC for the first 167 day of this year. The total number of cases so far that has been reported is 7,458. Based on it being only the 2% I mentioned above and using the CDC's model to calculate the numbers, the actual estimated number of infections they have counted so far is 372,900 nationwide. It is likely that the numbers for May and June in Arizona might triple what they have so far as that is what it was last year. That 372,900 number of estimated infections breaks down to 2,333 estimated infections per day. That is a huge and scary number. The VF Epidemic continues. We need better drugs and a vaccine.
