Hi All,
I got very sick in January of 2011 with what my doctor said was Valley Fever, even though my blood tested negative for VF. The pulmonary specialist I saw 3 months later also said there was a high probability of VF. I have had my blood tested a total of 4 times over the last 25 months with all results being negative. Even a year ago when I saw Dr. Galgianni (VF guru), based on my story of rash, fatigue and illness, he said VF. Now because I am still severely fatigued, and experienced a "relapse" of symptoms in January and February of this year, Dr. G doesn't think it is VF. I am now at the Mayo seeking answers.

Here is my question: even though my blood has never tested positive, can this still be VF? Are others experiencing what I will call a "post-viral(fungal) syndrome" that looks like a chronic fatigue type illness, but know for sure that it started as VF? Very maddening, frustrating, etc., to not know. I have lived a very altered and hindered life due for over 25 months now, and am not ready to give up on finding some answers (realizing, though, that there may not be any).

Thank you for reading and responding if you can. I believe in the work you are doing here, and am very dedicated to education about VF. I have tracked my illness on my website www.vickioart.com, with links to this website. I've been writing about VF this past year, and will need to update my site if in fact this isn't VF.

Any input you have will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you and hugs,
Vicki

Hi Vicki,

Research cited in Valley Fever Epidemic shows the blood tests are, at best, 70% accurate. If you were in the 30% then it is entirely possible this was VF.

As frustrating as it is, an answer is not the easiest thing to have at this point. If a doctor decided to start "empirical treatment" with antifungals (a medical guess) to see if that helps, you might be closer to an answer. If the antifungals make you feel better, that says at least that your infection was fungal if not specifically VF. That said, the antifungal drugs that work against VF have side effects, and sometimes even the expense, are so unpleasant that this is not a trivial consideration to make with your doctor. You both have to be sure the current symptoms would be worth the risk.

I always wish I could give clearer answers. I hope this at least helps.

Best of health,
